But I worked the thumb as follows. After increasing the amount of stitches needed for the thumb, I knit the thumb stitches with a spare thread, usually in a different color. Then I shift these stitches back on the left needle and knit them again following the pattern. After finishing the mitten, I take out the spare thread and pick up the stitches and work the thumb after the pattern, usually on 3 needles. I learned it that way in Norway, but I know that Cat Bordhi describes this technique in &lt;i&gt;A Second Treasury of Magical Knitting&lt;/i&gt; as &lt;b&gt;Waste yarn openings&lt;/b&gt;. There are probably descriptions on the net as well. 

Not sure if that answers your question if not, just ask again! I don&#039;t know &lt;i&gt;Folk Mittens&lt;/i&gt; though.</description>
